City Council President Kevin Hyde and Vice President Michael Corrigan are Recipients of the 2006 Character Counts Golden Rule Award

Thursday, February 16, 2006 Jacksonville, Fla.    

Jacksonville City Council President Kevin Hyde and Vice President Michael Corrigan where honored with the distinction of being named recipients of the 2006 Character Counts Golden Rule Award by CHARACTER COUNTS! In Jacksonville at the group's 4th annual Golden Rule Day Luncheon. The award was presented in a ceremony held at the Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 5-30 on Beach Boulevard on Thursday, February 16, 2006.

"CHARACTER COUNTS! In Jacksonville" is a nonpartisan, nonsectarian character development and ethics training organization dedicated to strengthening the character of Jacksonville's youth and adults by teaching core ethical values called the "Six Pillars of Character":  trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring and citizenship.  The Jacksonville chapter of CHARACTER COUNTS! is a member of the "CHARACTER COUNTS! Coalition" which is endorsed by the President, both houses of Congress, some 40 states and more than 1,000 communities, counties, school districts, and chambers of commerce.  Through common values and concerted action, the coalition has become the accepted leader in character education throughout the nation.
 
WHAT DOES CHARACTER COUNTS! DO?

* Character education resource for schools

* Provide Character Development Training workshops for parents, teachers, administrators, schools, and youth-serving organizations

* Provide Workplace Ethics Training Workshops to businesses and government

* Recognize citizens of various ages with outstanding character at our annual American Youth Character Awards

* Pursuing Victory with Honor Sportsmanship Workshops for coaches

* Conduct an ongoing community-wide public awareness initiative to ensure that the Six Pillars become a way of life in Jacksonville

Council President Hyde said "It's a tremendous honor to receive the Golden Rule Award because of what CHARACTER COUNTS! stands for. It reminds us all, especially those of us in public office, that we need to live lives of integrity in our public service. " Vice President Corrigan added CHARACTER COUNTS! is having a great effect in our community. The six pillars of character are the foundation of good citizenship, and I applaud CHARACTER COUNTS! for highlighting their importance every year."
