City Council Member Glorious Johnson to Receive Community Leadership Award at Florida Minority Community Economic Development Summit

Wednesday, May 20, 2009 Jacksonville, Fla.

Jacksonville City Council Member Glorious Johnson (At-large, Group 5) will be in Clearwater, Florida on May 26 and 27, 2009 to take part in the 7th Annual Florida Minority Community Economic Development Summit sponsored by the Florida Minority Community Redevelopment Coalition.  The theme of the summit is “Community Revitalization and Job Creation in Florida Low-Moderate Income Communities.” During the summit Council Member Johnson will be presented with the John Gamboa Community Leadership Award for her work in community organizing and bringing attention to issues of racial and economic disparity and injustice.

The award is named for John Gamboa, the Executive Director of the Greenlining Institute, a national policy, organizing and leadership institute working for racial and economic justice through building grassroots coalitions of grassroots leaders to help tackle the nation’s pressing and inter-related racial and economic issues.

Councilwoman Johnson expressed her gratitude at being named this year’s recipient of the John Gamboa Community Leadership Award.  “I am honored and humbled to be chosen for this award.  Economic justice is such an important issue that goes right to the heart of what our communities can and should be about, which is providing a fair opportunity to all our citizens to take part in the American dream and to achieve economic security.  I hope my efforts contribute in some small way to bringing attention to these issues so that together we can find solutions to the problems that hold our communities back.”
