Councilwoman Glorious Johnson Appointed to Florida Judicial Nominating Committee

Thursday, August 25, 2005 Jacksonville, Fla.    

Jacksonville City Council Member Glorious Johnson (At-Large, Group 5) was appointed last week by U.S. Senator Mel Martinez to serve on Florida's federal district court Judicial Nominating Commission, an entity created by the Florida Congressional delegation to provide recommendations for potential nominees to the Florida Federal District Courts. The commission's members are divided into geographic regions corresponding to the three division of the US. District Courts in Florida, and Councilwoman Johnson is a member of the Middle District Conference.

In announcing the formation of the commission, Senator Martinez said "Recommending people of the highest character, intellect, integrity and fair-mindedness for appointment to the federal bench is among the most important responsibilities of any United States Senator. I look forward to the commission providing valuable input to myself and Senator Nelson for this important service."

Councilwoman Johnson is honored by the appointment and looks forward to taking an active part in the commission's proceedings. She noted that the role of the courts is fundamental to the preservation of the rule of law and our long-standing system of checks and balances in government, and she is anxious to play a part in the all-important selection of judges who demonstrate impeccable character, integrity, and respect for the law.
