City Council Member Jerry Holland Launches Fire and Rescue’s Fire Boat, Marine 3, as part of $2 Million Public Safety and Education Program

Friday, August 06, 2004 Jacksonville, Fla.

On behalf of the Jacksonville City Council, Councilman Jerry Holland, District 3, will christen Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department’s new fire boat, Marine 3, utilizing some of the $2 million settlement he negotiated with Comcast in the 2002-2003 Council year. The money was established for public safety and educational projects for the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office, the Duval County Public School system, and the Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department. As part of this project, Comcast has already funded thermal imaging cameras, vehicle extricating equipment and portable water pumps for Duval County fire stations along with portable defibrillation units and computer/library enhancements for Duval County public schools.

"As a Council, we feel that it is imperative to equip our schools, firefighters, emergency rescue and police officers with the best tools for them to do their job safely and effectively." Holland said. "We want to thank Comcast for being such a great public partner. This new fire boat will be a great asset towards providing a quick response and added security to our citizens, as well as needed equipment for a city of our size."

The ceremony for the christening and boat launch of Marine 3 will take place on Tuesday, August 10, 2004, at 10:00 a.m. at the waterfront at the Jacksonville Landing, 2 East Independent Drive. A separate boat will be provided for media to take pictures of the event. The public is encouraged to attend.
