The Mayor's Commission on the Status of Women was established as an advisory commission on May 30, 1972 by Mayor Hans G. Tanzler, Jr. It was upgraded to full commission status by Mayor Jake Godbold in 1982. The commission is comprised of 25 members appointed by the Mayor to three year terms. The officers of the commission are a Chairperson, a First Vice Chairperson, a Second Vice Chairperson and a Secretary. A long range plan for the Commission was adopted several years ago. The following mission statement and goals were adopted:
Mission Statement
To advise the Mayor on the status of women and to serve as a catalyst for positive change for women in Jacksonville, Florida.
Vision
By educating, advocating and celebrating … to create a city where women achieve social, economic and political equality.
Goals:
- To inform and advise the mayor about the needs and concerns of women in Jacksonville
- To encourage the appointment of more women to city government in Jacksonville
- To involve more women in the political process and encourage more women to seek elective office
- To educate the public on women's issues
- To advocate on behalf of women's issues
- To celebrate women and their accomplishments
