Program Funding

The BJP half-penny sales tax will fund $1.5 billion of the entire $2.25 billion program.  The remaining $750 million is funded through existing sources.

The sales tax, which raised Duval County's rate to 6.5 percent, must sunset no later than Dec. 31, 2030.  Current projections indicate the tax may sunset several years earlier.

A number of goods and services are exempt from the sales tax. These items include most food, medicine and support services such as day care. In addition, for expensive items such as cars, the new half-penny sales tax can't exceed $25 on any one purchase.

The BJP work program is divided into four categories:

ROADS/INFRASTRUCTURE/TRANSPORTATION - $1.5 billion

PUBLIC FACILITIES - $525 million

ENVIRONMENT/QUALITY OF LIFE - $165 million

TARGETED ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT - $60 million

The figures associated with each project/program do not necessarily reflect the total amount that has been or will be expended.  Other funding sources, such as grants, may be used to supplement the funding provided by the BJP.

However, the BJP funds may only be used on the project/program for which it is allocated in the BJP work program, unless otherwise approved by City Council.
