Many residents throughout Jacksonville, including children, must cross busy railroad tracks to get to school or work. Elevated walkways over busy rail lines will provide safe passage in critical areas. In addition to elevated pedestrian walkways, an elevated vehicular crossing will be constructed where trains frequently stop traffic and cause delays.
New Kings Road (US 1) - South of 45th Street (in design)
A six-lane vehicular overpass will be constructed to replace the existing ground-level railroad crossing. This will help alleviate traffic delays caused at this crossing by passing trains.
This project is expected to begin in early 2008.
Franklin Street - North of 17th Street (complete)
A pedestrian overpass has been constructed to bridge three sets of railroad tracks at this location, providing residents safe passage over this busy crossing.
7th Street - Between Harrison and Milnor Streets (under construction)
A pedestrian overpass has been constructed to span the existing single-track railroad crossing, presenting walkers and runners with a continuous route over the track.
This project is expected to be complete by late summer 2007.
