Vehicular beach access will be limited at Huguenot Memorial Park through the end of the week due to recent severe erosion of the beach access roadway caused by rough surf and high tides.

The eastbound lane of the road, approximately 100 feet in length, has been closed since the washout was discovered Monday morning. The city is working to prevent further erosion to the area. Starting this morning, a crew will work to stabilize the shoreline with sand, crush crete and a thin blanket-like product known as fabric underdrain. The product allows water to flow through the area but prevents sand from washing away.

Pedestrians may access the beach but parking is limited to the areas near the entrance of the park and the concession stand. Park visitors should also be aware that as a safety precaution, access to the beach on foot may also be limited during periods of high tide.

The campground will remain open. However, one of the two campground entrances will be closed to allow for the staging of work materials.

Managed by the City of Jacksonville's Recreation and Community Services Department, Huguenot Memorial Park is located at 10980 Heckscher Drive. The park is open 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. from April through October and 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. from November through March.
