The loss of a loved one can affect children in substantial ways.
Consider these figures from Columbia University:
- In the United States, 70 percent of primary schools have bereaved students and 85 percent of secondary schools reported post-bereavement problems.
- 86 - 92 percent of young people in drug and rehabilitation treatment programs have experienced the death of someone important.
- In a survey of 300 incarcerated teens, 96 percent indicated that someone significant in their lives had died.
- 83 percent of children who do receive support, return to normal functioning in their schoolwork, psychology and emotions a little more than a year after their parents death, or sometimes sooner.
