Through the Clean It Up, Green It Up campaign started in 1996, residents worked as partners with the city on projects to beautify their neighborhoods by cleaning up litter and planting trees. Former Mayor John Delaney challenged the community to plant more than one million trees in the first five years of the campaign. At the completion of the five-year initiative more than 300,000 trees had been given away citywide through partnership with JEA and over 1,022,000 trees had been planted by residents, businesses, neighborhoods, community organizations and agencies.

A variety of beautification programs were established.  The Adopt-A-Road program and a number of annual events were set up to provide additional volunteer opportunities. 

 A new Keep Jacksonville Beautiful Commission, which was appointed by Mayor John Peyton at the end of 2003, is working to develop recommendations on a variety of community beautifucation initiatives.
