Work Specifications

Communications Officer tasks include receiving, relaying and transmitting emergency calls.  Officers also dispatch Fire and Rescue personnel and/or equipment as needed.  Specialized training allows officers to learn the techniques and procedures used in operating emergency communications equipment.  Officers must possess skills in communicating with individuals who are encountering stressful situations.  Quick and effective responses are critical.  Work tasks are modeled by established procedures and precedents, but some discretion is permitted to consider the most appropriate course of action.  The work involves many different situations that can be handled by following well defined procedures, practices, and techniques. 

Work skills include operating emergency communications equipment, two-way radios, and a telephone system. The work is performed in an office environment. The physical demands consist of working under stressful conditions and sitting for extended periods of time. The work is performed under general supervision in which assignments are subject to instructions and established work routines.
