It is my honor to serve as Chair of the Jacksonville Human Rights Commission.
Throughout its history, the Commission has strived to serve as a clearing house, coordinator, and facilitator on human rights issues, and to partner with other public and private agencies in the pursuit of a fairer, more just Jacksonville community. In recent years, through the use of the Study Circles process, the Commission has fostered mutual understanding and respect for all the citizens making up our diverse population. This has promoted individual and small group dialogue, research on racial attitudes, and sponsorship of public forums to encourage greater racial, religious, and gender inclusiveness.
We continue to resolve discrimination complaints in housing, employment, and operating as a partner with the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development and the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. In June 2004, the Commission's authority was expanded to include the enforcement of public accommodations complaints to ensure that all our residents can enjoy the full benefit of all the services offered in our community.
We are proud of our history and remain committed to protecting the rights of our citizens.
