The United States Department of Transportation, Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) publishes the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD). The MUTCD contains the standards for traffic control devices that regulate, warn, and guide road users along the highways and byways in all 50 States. Traffic control devices are important because they optimize traffic performance, promote uniformity nationwide, and help improve safety by reducing the number and severity of traffic crashes. International Municipal Signal Association (IMSA)

The International Municipal Signal Association (IMSA) is the leading international resource for information, education, and certification for public safety. Established in 1896 with Thomas Edison and the Edison Electric Company as associate members in 1901, its principle mission is to keep its 10,000 members and others in the profession continuously up to date on new procedures for the maintenance, construction, and operation of all public safety systems. These systems include but are not limited to traffic signals, signs and markings, roadway lighting, fire alarm systems and public safety dispatching.
