The following topics are available free of charge as a service of the City of Jacksonville and the University of Florida IFAS Extension.  The modules may be offered separately or as a series at worksites (Lunch and Learn) or for group meetings.  

  • Effective Strategies for Personal Money Management – Participants will learn to develop a successful financial plan in six steps: Setting goals, Preparing a net worth statement, Gathering past income and expense records, Completing the Spending and Saving Planner, Keeping records of spending and saving, Evaluating and Revising.

  • Spending Tomorrow's Money Today – Covers understanding credit histories and scores, credit contracts, co-signing for loans, warning signs of credit crisis, and debt management.
  • Protecting Financial Security - Developing sound strategies for handling financial risk that suit your needs and lifestyle. Covers retaining, transferring, reducing, and avoiding financial risk.   
  • Buying Your First Home – Discussions and worksheets on the decision to buy or rent, estimating the amount you can borrow, calculating the amount of monthly mortgage payment you can afford, and deciding on the features in a home that are important to you.
  • Should I Buy or Lease My Next Car? – This workshop covers the decisions to consider when getting your next car, including choosing between a new or used vehicle, deciding whether to trade cars frequently or hold onto them until they wear out, and selecting the purchase method best for you.  
  • Investing Basics – Discover the difference between saving and investing, how diversification reduces risk, and the basics of stocks, bond, and mutual funds. 
  • Saving for College – Developing a strategy for saving for your child's college education and choosing from 6 options.  
  • Planning for Retirement – Helps you estimate the amount you will need in retirement and explores potential sources, including social security, pensions, and personal investments.

  • Financial Matters for Later Life – Includes strategies for streamlining financial management tasks and how to facilitate family decisions on housing, medical care, and long-term care for later life.
