The Mayor's Disability Council was created in 1989. Special care was taken to make certain that a cross section of disabilities would be represented. Approximately 80 percent of the 13 members appointed by the mayor have disabilities. Some are visually impaired, blind, deaf, mobility impaired, while some have hidden disabilities, or are parents of children with disabilities. These council members volunteer their time and expertise to improve the lifestyle of persons with disabilities. This council works hand in hand with the Disabled Services Division.
Mission Statement: The purposes of the Jacksonville Mayor's Disability Council (hereafter MDC) are to provide a public forum for persons, groups and businesses to present their disability problems, concerns and successes, and to acknowledge work done well. The MDC shall be responsible for timely reports of same to the Jacksonville mayor.
