Police Explorers Program
 

The JSO Police Explorers program educates and involves youth in police operations and develops their interest in the law enforcement profession. The JSO Police Explorer Program is a part of the Florida Sheriff's Explorers Association state wide program. The Police Explorers train on a regular basis and then compete in regional and statewide competitions to test thier skills against other Police Explorers.

The Police Explorers are trained on the
following:   
• Building Search
• Crime Scene Investigation
• Crisis Intervention
• Domestic Violence
• Dispatch/Radio Procedures
• Physical Agility Test (P.A.T.)
• Pistol Usage and Safety
• Traffic Stops (Unknown Risk)
• Traffic Crash Investigation

Currently there are two Explorer Posts, Post 948 and Post 949, located in Jacksonville. The Explorers meet the first and third Monday of each month at the Police Memorial Building, 501 E. Bay Street, Jacksonville, FL 32202.

Membership is open to young adults ages fourteen through twenty-one. Along with parental approval and a general liability release form, explorers are expected to maintain a minimum scholastic standard of 2.0 GPA.

All new candidates must attend 64 hours of training in various police related functions on Tuesdays and Thursdays for eight weeks. At present there are 65 young adults taking advantage of the Explorer Program. Applications are being accepted for a fall 2008 class for qualified youth.
