National Night Out 2007

The 24th Annual National Night out (NNO) is Tuesday, August 7. For the 21st year, JSO will participate by holding more than 100 separate NNO events in Jacksonville neighborhoods. The purpose of these events is to reinforce the principles and importance of neighborhood watch programs in our community.

The events include planned activities designed to strengthen each neighborhood, increase crime prevention awareness, police/neighborhood relationships, and increase support and participation in neighborhood watch programs run by local law enforcement.

"Ensuring a safe neighborhood takes a partnership between the police, you, and your neighbors", said Sheriff John H. Rutherford. "National Night Out is an opportunity for neighbors to come together and show their solidarity in the fight against crime in Jacksonville."

The 24th Annual National Night Out is a unique crime/drug prevention event sponsored by the National Association of Town Watch (NATW). Last year's National Night Out campaign involved citizens, law enforcement agencies, civic groups, businesses, neighborhood organizations and local officials from over 10,000 communities from all 50 states, U.S. territories, Canadian cities and military bases worldwide. In all, over 34 million people participated in NNO 2006.

Additional Information
There are more than 750 neighborhood watch programs currently in operation. The Neighborhood Watch principle is founded on neighbors watching out for other neighbors during times when criminal activity would most likely occur, and reporting suspicious activity to police.
