The Homicide Unit is comprised of a lieutenant, seven sergeants and 28 detectives. This includes six "hot" homicide teams comprised of one sergeant and four detectives per team and one cold case team.
The six active homicide teams handle death investigation cases such as murder, manslaughter, suicide, accidental death (non traffic related), in-custody death, death of a suspicious or undetermined nature where a doctor will not sign the death certificate and any incident (except traffic crashes) resulting in life threatening injury. The cold case team handles all unsolved homicides in which new information or technology is available and the original detective is no longer in the unit.
The cold case team also investigates officer- involved shooting incidents (when an officer shoots someone or is shot, regardless of the injury extent) and officer-involved custodial incidents with life threatening injury.
