The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office Canine Unit is staffed with a unit
commander, two sergeants and eighteen police officers. Twenty active Police Service Dogs (PSD) are currently in the unit. Eighteen of the PSD's are dual purpose canines. Two of the canines are single purpose explosive detection dogs.
There are four trainer/handlers in the unit. Eighteen of the dog teams are trained for patrol dog work:apprehensions, area searches, tracking, and article searches. Six of those dogs are cross trained in explosive detection, and the remaining twelve dogs are trained in narcotics detection. The two sergeants handle the single purpose explosive detection dogs.
The Canine Unit also played a vital role in the seizure of over $407,000 in 2007. In addition, the Canine Unit conducted 14 Protective Explosive Searches of Alltel Stadium for Jaguar Football Games and numerous Protective Explosive Searches for visiting dignitaries.
The Canine Unit conducted 60 demonstrations at churches, schools and private organizations during 2007. In addition to the demonstrations, the Canine Unit conducted dozens of narcotic searches for public and private schools. The Canine Unit also coordinates and administers training to canine units within our region.
