Dive Team

Dive team at work in open waterThe Dive Team falls under the Department of Homeland Security. Qualified police divers are assigned throughout the agency.  The Dive Team is staffed by one lieutenant who is the unit commander, two sergeants and 12 officers.  Two members of the team are certified instructors, both of whom hold the rating of Master Scuba Diver Trainer.    Several members of the Dive Team are certified as qualified rescue, search and recovery, first aid and CPR providers, as well as dry suit divers.  Each member of the police Dive Team now possesses, at a minimum, the certification of advanced/rescue diver, with a specialty certification in cavern diving.  Also, each diver is nitrox (enriched air) certified.  In addition, the Dive Team instructors certified members of the Bomb Squad as open water divers, as well as conducted advanced underwater recovery training with the Bomb Squad members who are also SCUBA certified.

The Dive Team has at its disposal a 24-foot van to transport equipment, a 14-foot Zodiac boat, a 22-foot Boston Whaler dive boat and a four-door 4x4 truck.  All this equipment along with the divers is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week on an on-call basis.  All dive team members are equipped with a complete set of SCUBA gear issued by the Sheriff's Office.

The Dive Team conducts training a minimum of once a month.  Each training session is "task oriented," using realistic scenarios to build experience and techniques.   The training is documented on a training log, keeping a detailed record of training scenarios, objectives, attendance and equipment used during training. Several days are dedicated to advancing diver certifications in specialized areas such as search and recovery, nitrox (enriched air), bulkhead security searches and diver decontamination guidelines.  The team will also train for special events prior to those events.

The Dive Team will also respond to assist other local and federal law enforcement agencies upon request.
