Mounted Unit

The basic duties of the Mounted Unit are crime deterrence, community relations, and crowd control.  The Mounted Unit consists of a unit commander, one sergeant, five officers, a stable manager and six police horses.  The Mounted Unit is located at 1076 W. Duval Street in the LaVilla area of downtown. 

In 2007 the unit continued its support of the overall patrol function by patrolling in Springfield, Riverside, downtown Jacksonville, and parts of Zone's 2 and 5.   

The Mounted Unit will deploy to any zone that makes the request or has a special need.  The Mounted Unit assisted with the original Operation Safe Streets (O.S.S.) Initiative in 2006.     

The Mounted Unit also augments special event security efforts at the Jacksonville Jaguar games, the Florida/Georgia football game, July 4th celebration, and New Year's Eve celebration to name a few. 


Mounted unit improves community relations during visit with children. The unit also performed 72 demonstrations for various schools and community groups, and the Unit is involved in the Black Stallion Literacy Project which supports reading development for children. These activities help to strengthen the Sheriff's Office's relationship with the community.
