Friday, March 30, 2007 Jacksonville, Fla.
Recently Mayor John Peyton proclaimed February 2007 to be the 20th Anniversary of Jacksonville's 911 Service.
On Feb. 5, 2007, Sheriff John Rutherford read the Proclamation in the Communications Center at the Police Memorial Building.

Proclamation
Whereas: The 911 Emergency Telephone System began providing service in Jacksonville and the Beaches on February 1st, 1987; and
Whereas: During the past 20 years, this system has offered one simple phone number to call for all emergencies, replacing 17 different phone numbers which had been in use in police and fire-rescue departments across the First Coast's counties; and
Whereas: The 911 System contributes substantially to the health and safety of Jacksonville's residents through the timely delivery of emergency calls to the correct emergency response agency and the automatic identification of the callers phone numbers and locations; and
Whereas: The prompt response of police, firefighters and paramedics is critical to protecting life and preserving property. It also results in the apprehension of criminals, the suppression of fires and timely treatment of the ill and injured; and
Whereas: The Jacksonville 911 System has been a leader in making 911 service accessible to hearing impaired and non-English speaking persons.
Now, and therefore, I, John Peyton, by virtue of the power vested in me as mayor of Jacksonville, Florida, do hereby proclaim February 2007 as the
20th Anniversary of Jacksonville's 911 Service
and encourage all residents to recognize the value of this system in our daily lives and to acknowledge the dedicated people who oversee its operation every minute of every day for our safety.
IN WITNESS THEREOF, this 1st day of February in the year Two Thousand 07,
John Peyton
Mayor
City of Jacksonville, Florida
