Women's Center of Jacksonville Calls Attention to the Realities of Sexual Violence

WHAT: April is National Sexual Assault Awareness Month. Women's Center of Jacksonville joins with the Duval county community to commemorate National Sexual Assault Awareness Day, April 2, 2009.
A kick off event held at the Police Memorial Building in the Drill Hall will include speakers and a pinning ceremony. This event will be broadcast via the internet at www.coj.net/sheriff and begins at 10 a.m.
The Women's Center of Jacksonville will hold an evening event. The "Surviving to Thriving" program will consist of art work created by survivors and a survivor "speak out". It is held in honor of sexual assault survivors and their loved ones in our community. This event is held at 5644 Colcord Avenue and begins at 6 p.m.

WHO: Attending the kickoff event will be: Mayor John Peyton, Sheriff John Rutherford, a representative from the State Attorney's Office. Also in attendance will be Shirley K. Webb Executive Director of Women's Center of Jacksonville, members from the Rape Recovery Team of the Women's Center of Jacksonville, members from the Sexual Assault Response Center and other local agencies.
Visual Opportunities: The Kick off event consists of a ribbon pinning ceremony and other visual displays. Survivor artwork will be displayed at the Women's Center of Jacksonville during the evening event as well as a ribbon tying ceremony in the courtyard.
Interview Opportunities: Sexual assault survivors, advocates, and other experts in the field will be available to speak with media.
