News Release-Trend to Scam or Attempt to Scam Businesses

Thursday, February 19, 2009 Jacksonville, Fla.

The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office has noticed a trend where businesses in the community are attempted or being scammed.  We are trying to get word out to all the business to keep them from being the next victim.

There is no specific day or time that these incidents are occurring.  The majority of businesses being targeted are restaurants.

An unknown caller calls the business and will give a name of a higher management person that works at the location and tell them to prepare a cash refund for a good customer or client.  He will tell them where in the store to obtain the funds from (register, safe, etc).  The amounts vary from minimal amounts to upwards to over a thousand dollars.  The unknown caller will then give them an address or location to drop it off at.

This is a scam and the businesses need to verify with follow up phone calls.

This is still an active and ongoing investigation.

Anyone with information about these scams is asked to contact the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office at 630-0500 or First Coast Crime Stoppers at 1-866-845-TIPS (8477) to remain anonymous.
