Health Insurance Plan
State Attorney's Office employees may choose from two types of health plans: a statewide Preferred Provider Organization (PPO) plan or a Health Maintenance Organization (HMO) plan. Both types of plans are considered managed care plans and have specific provider networks employees are expected to use. Employees pay the same premium regardless of the plan chosen. If both you and your spouse are active career service state employees, you are eligible for health insurance coverage at no cost.
Preferred Provider Organization (PPO)
The State Employee's PPO plan is a self-insured health plan administered by Blue Cross Blue Shield of Florida, Inc. (BCBSF) under a contract with the State of Florida. The plan administrator is responsible for processing health claims, providing access to a Preferred Provider Care Network, and managing the customer service, utilization review and case management functions.
Health Maintenance Organizations (HMO)
Each HMO is a self-administered, prepaid health plan that provides health services to people who live or work within the HMO's service area. Since HMOs emphasize early detection and treatment of illness to reduce expensive and inconvenient hospital stays, they tend to offer a range of benefits that may include prevention health care and other services.
HMOs are not available in all areas of the state. If one is not available in the county where you either live or work, the only State sponsored health insurance option available is the State Employee's PPO plan.
Life Insurance Plan
State Attorney's Office employees are eligible for straight term life insurance, with an accidental death and dismemberment benefit, underwritten by Prudential Insurance Company. This insurance is available to full-time and part-time employees. The coverage for full-time career service employees is 1.5 times the employee's annual salary and the employee is responsible for paying 20% of the premium. For Selected Exempt Service and Senior Management Service employees, coverage is double the employee's annual salary and the State of Florida pays the full premium as an additional employee benefit. Employees may also purchase additional term life insurance from one to five times the amount of annual salary, up to a maximum of $500,000.00. Enrollees will be paid a benefit for injuries and death claims will be awarded to the beneficiary on record.
Optional Insurance and Benefit Plans
Eligible employees are afforded the opportunity to participate in a number of optional Supplemental Insurance plans and to have the premium payments for these plans deducted from their paycheck. The State does not contribute any portion of the premium for these plans. Employees may enroll in one or more of the following Supplemental Insurance plans: Life, Accident, Disability, Cancer, Intensive Care, Hospitalization, and Dental.
Additional benefits/programs offered to Department employees on a payroll deduction basis include: Deferred Compensation plan, Pre-Paid Legal Insurance, Automobile Insurance, U.S. Savings Bonds, Credit Unions, and Pre-Paid College Tuition program.
Additional information for employee insurance plans is provided by the Department of Management Services, Division of State Group Insurance.
Retirement
All new employees (except OPS) automatically become members of the Florida Retirement System (FRS) and are covered by Federal Social Security.
The State pays the full cost of the retirement contribution into the FRS fund. Two options are offered, the pension plan and the investment plan. Employees have 180 days from the date of employment to select an option. Social Security deductions are matched by the State.
Eligibility for retirement is gained by completing at least six years of credible service and attaining age 62 or by completing 30 years of credible service regardless of age. Members of special risk classes are eligible for full retirement after 25 years of credible service regardless of age. The retirement system also provides for disability retirement for employees under certain conditions. Additional information, including forms, is provided by the Department of Management Services, Division of Retirement.
Leave
Annual leave may be used for vacation purposes or other time spent away from work. Sick leave may be used for the employee's personal illness, injury, or personal appointment with a doctor, dentist, or other recognized practitioner. Sick leave may also be used for the illness, injury, or well care check-ups of the employee's spouse, children, or parents of the employee or the employee's spouse.
