Public school systems in Florida keep a universal statistic on recorded absences. This statistic, the 21-day number, calculates the number of students in a school year who missed 21 days or more. This number does not make any differentiation between unexcused and excused absences. There is no way to determine from the 21-day number how many students have a chronic illness which keeps them from school, or how many students were skipping. It only reports on those who have missed more than 21 days of school in a single school year. The following chart shows how many students in Duval County have missed more than 21 days of school for the past school year. It should be noted that Duval County has approximately 125,000 students.
