Monday, Oct. 8: City of Jacksonville employees are encouraged to wear attire from their alma mater or favorite college for “Rep your College Day.”
Tuesday, Oct. 9: Dr. Donnie Horner, Education Commissioner and Cedric Cruse, Program Manager, Education Initiatives, will visit Frank H. Peterson Academy at 10:30 a.m. and Fletcher High School at noon to meet with high school acceleration coordinators, career academies staff and their students.
Thursday, Oct. 11: Dr. Horner will participate in the JAX Chamber roundtable discussion on “Working Together to Improve College Readiness, Access and Completion.” The roundtable will take place at the JAX Chamber, Hadlow Board Room, 3 Independent Dr., from 9 a.m.-11:15 a.m.
Thursday, Oct. 11: Mayor Brown and Dr. Horner will attend the Achieving the Dream Scholarship luncheon held in conjunction with Hispanic Heritage Month, at the Hyatt Regency, 225 East Coastline Dr., 2nd Floor, Ballrooms 5-8.
Friday, Oct. 12: Dr. Horner will announce the winners of the
Mayor Brown Essay Contest. The contest began Sept. 27 and will end Tuesday, Oct. 9. Participants include High School, Elementary and Middle School students, with three prizes awarded in each school category. First place winners will receive a new iPad computer tablet, second place winners will receive a Nexus 7 tablet, and third place essay winners will receive a $150.00 gift card.
Saturday, Oct. 13: The "Jacksonville National College Fair" will be held at the Prime Osborn Convention Center from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. Admission and parking are free. Eighth through 12th-grade students are encouraged to attend with their families to learn about the college application process, available grants and scholarships and Federal Financial Aid. The fair will also feature information sessions presented in Spanish. Please visit
