Mayors Against Illegal Guns (MAIG)is a bi-partisan coalition of mayors dedicated to making cities safer by reducing the number of illegal guns. The coalition shares ideas and supports common sense measures to stem the flow of illegal guns. Member mayors sign a Statement of Principles focused on addressing the problem of illegal guns in the hands of criminals.

Mayor John Peyton hosted a Florida Conference of Mayors Against Illegal Guns March 3, 2008, during which 20 Florida mayors became new members of the coalition. The co-chairman of the coalition, New York City Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg, attended the event and joined Mayor Peyton and other mayors in panel discussions outlining federal gaps and state legislative contrasts, the economic costs of illegal guns and new models for community engagement. Mayor Bloomberg used the Florida Conference to announce the formation of State Legislators Against Illegal Guns, a group that will work closely with the mayors coalition on shared goals.
Members of The Jacksonville Journey – Mayor Peyton's comprehensive, community-wide initiative to stemming reduce violent crime in Jacksonville – participated in the final panel of the day, "Community Involvement: What Jacksonville is Doing." During this discussion, members of The Jacksonville Journey shared information with and learned from attending mayors.
On April 14, 2008, the mayor attended the 2008 National Summit of Mayors Against Illegal Guns in Washington, D.C., where the 2008 federal agenda was finalized. Mayor Peyton will continue to work through MAIG, The Jacksonville Journey and other creative initiatives to create a roadmap for achieving peace and prosperity in every home, on every street, for every citizen.
