Mayor John Peyton hosted a Florida Conference of Mayors Against Illegal Guns March 3, 2008, during which 20 Florida mayors became new members of the coalition. The co-chairman of the coalition, New York City Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg, attended the event and joined Mayor Peyton and other mayors in panel discussions outlining federal gaps and state legislative contrasts, the economic costs of illegal guns and new models for community engagement. Mayor Bloomberg used the Florida Conference to announce the formation of State Legislators Against Illegal Guns, a group that will work closely with the mayors coalition on shared goals.

On April 14, 2008, the mayor attended the 2008 National Summit of Mayors Against Illegal Guns in Washington, D.C., where the 2008 federal agenda was finalized.  Mayor Peyton will continue to work through MAIG, The Jacksonville Journey and other creative initiatives to create a roadmap for achieving peace and prosperity in every home, on every street, for every citizen.
