Mentoring & Training
Become a Mentor! The Mentor Training course is a comprehensive and interactive two-hour training class that prepares volunteers for the mentoring experience by giving them the skills, knowledge and confidence needed to be successful during their time spent with their mentee. Our goal is for all mentors to have an enjoyable and rewarding experience both as a volunteer and a mentor.
We have created a useful Mentoring Opportunities Guide to help you learn more about the available programs.

Mentor training classes are typically held at the Jacksonville Children's Commission, and all volunteers must undergo a thorough background screening with Live-Scan fingerprinting.

Children’s Commission Hosts Successful Professional Development Conference
On Aug. 2, 2011, the Jacksonville Children’s Commission hosted a Professional Development Conference for youth-serving organizations and its funded afterschool partners. Participants included leadership staff from the Boys & Girls Clubs of Northeast Florida, The Bridge of Northeast Florida, Community Connections, Communities in Schools, Duval County Public Schools, Hope Haven Children’s Clinic and Family Center, MaliVai Washington Kids Foundation, Police Athletic League, Wayman Academy of the Arts and YMCA of Florida’s First Coast.
The focus of the day was on elevating the organization's staff through a variety of extended learning time trainings and laying the fabric for future professional development opportunities through the Commission. Participants attended break out sessions that were specifically designed to meet their organization’s needs from a staff, programmatic, or management-level perspective and addressed best practices for quality afterschool and summer learning. Break out sessions included topics such as Adding More Enrichment to Your Program and Elevating Literacy in Your Program.
