How do I apply for a position?
In order to be considered for a position currently available with our organization, an employment application must be submitted. Current job openings may be viewed by clicking on 'Apply for a job' in the left hand menu on the Human Resources home page. The website is updated weekly. Additionally, job openings are available on our 24-hour Job News Line (904) 630-1144 or by visiting the recruiting office located at City Hall at St. James, 117 W. Duval Street, Suite 100, Jacksonville, FL 32202. New job openings are also advertised in the Florida Times Union and other local newspapers.

How do I submit my resume for a position not posted?
Applications are only accepted for positions currently advertised. Unsolicited resumes cannot be accepted.

The position I'm interested in does not appear on the website?
Job openings are posted on the website when there is a need. They are posted for 5 to 10 days unless it is on continuous recruitment. The deadline to apply is always posted where the position is advertised. Applications are only accepted during the posting period.

How do I apply for a position as a Police Officer?
Recruitment for sworn positions with the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office (JSO) is handled directly by JSO. It is possible to access JSO's website at www.JoinJSO.com. Just click on 'Learn More' or 'Apply Now' under the career path which interest you most.

How do I apply for a position as a Firefighter?
The City only accepts applications for positions currently advertised and cannot accept unsolicited applications/resumes. Additional information regarding employment with the Jacksonville Fire and Rescue (JFRD) can be found on the 'Fire and Rescue' link under 'Office' in the left margin of the www.coj.net website.

I want to teach in Duval County, but don't know where to learn about teaching opportunities.
The City of Jacksonville does not recruit for the school system. Please visit the Florida State Board of Education at www.fldoe.org/ or Duval County Public Schools at http://www.duvalcountyschools.org/

How do I create a User Name and Password?
You create your user name and password when you register for the first time. See 'How do I create a profile?'

I have forgotten my user name or password.
At the bottom of the log in page click 'Forgot Password' and follow the instructions.

The human resources staff cannot retrieve this information. If you are unable to obtain your user name and password by following the above instructions you will need to register as a new user and create a new profile. It is VERY important to record your user name and password when registering.

I cannot register, log on, view jobs, or apply.
You cannot view our job postings if you are trying to access this portion of our web site from a computer that has security features installed (firewall). This is common when accessing the Internet from a worksite. Please try again from home, the human resources office (City Hall, 117 West Duval Street, Suite 100), or any Jacksonville Public Library location.

How do I create a profile?
Go to www.coj.net and click on 'Jobs.' This takes you to the Human Resources home page. Click on 'Current Job Openings' in the left margin. Click on 'Log In' in the middle of the page. This takes you to the Applicant Tracking System (ATS) log in. If you have already visited ATS and have a user name and password, enter it under 'Registered User.' This is case sensitive and must be entered exactly.

If new to ATS, under 'New Register' please create your User Name and Password. You will need the user name and password later, so please record this information for future use.

On the next screen click on 'Create Profile.' Follow instructions through the application. Be sure to include as much detail as possible.

Once the profile is complete, you are ready to 'apply' for a job. You complete this process by clicking on the position of interest to you. You will answer a few brief questions before receiving a message stating you have successfully applied.

How can I apply without sharing my social security number?
Please contact the human resources recruiting office at 630-1111 for assistance.

There are duplicate entries on my online application. How do I correct it?
Currently, there is no way to delete duplicate entries for employment history and educational qualifications due to system design. We understand this feature needs to be changed, and are working to do so. Until then, please know hiring managers understand this technical inconvenience, and duplicate entries are disregarded.

I have faxed my resume, transcripts, DD-214, etc. How do I confirm they were received?
Due to the high volume of applications and faxes our office receives we are unable to search for resumes and other attachments. Resumes, with a cover sheet that includes your name, posting number of position you are applying for, and social security number, should be faxed to 904-630-8240. If you have faxed your documents to this number than your documents will be attached to your application.

How do I update my online resume?
The system does not allow you to update your online resume. You may fax your updated resume to 904-630-8240 to be attached to your application. Please place the date at the top of your resume so we can determine which resume is most current.

I have submitted an online application for a position currently advertised. What happens next?
Once applications are received and reviewed by the Human Resource Analyst, a determination is made as to whether each candidate possesses the minimum requirements for the position. Those meeting the minimum requirements are notified regarding any examinations to be administered. If no exam exists for a particular position, the candidate would be notified regarding their eligibility for further consideration. Once the applicant successfully passes the exam, if applicable, they become officially 'eligible' for the position and remain eligible for one year.

As vacancies occur, these eligible applicants are reviewed by hiring managers and are sometime reviewed by a number of departments within the City. It is important to note that there are at times 100 qualified candidate names on an active eligibility list, and it is not feasible for the hiring manager to interview every candidate. Rather, he or she selects those candidates for an interview that most closely match the preferred skills and abilities required of the job. The hiring manager then conducts interviews and selects the candidate that best meets the unique requirements of the department.

When will I be notified of the test?
Most test dates are included in the job posting. If a date is not available, then you will receive notification of the test by email or U.S. Mail.

For walk-in exams, the notice for the examination is contained in the posting itself. See sample below.

ONLINE APPLICATION IS REQUIRED. Apply at www.coj.net. To be considered, you must meet the minimum requirements and appear for computerized testing between Monday, March 3, 2008 and Thursday, March 6, 2008. Testing will be conducted from 8:00 am - 10:00 am and 1:00 pm - 3:00 pm at City Hall, 117 West Duval Street, Suite 100. No appointment is necessary. Examination will be given on a first-come basis, and may require a wait.

Test dates, times, and location for the walk-in test center are always documented wherever the posting is
(newspaper, website, and job board). This is advertised at the time the job is posted so applicants can make arrangement to attend and participate in the testing at their convenience throughout the week.

I missed the walk-in test. Can I reschedule it?
Exams cannot be rescheduled.

If you still need assistance with the online application, please contact recruit@coj.net or call (904) 630-1111 to speak with a member of the recruiting team.
