Mayoral Internship Positions
 
The Executive Office of the Mayor of Jacksonville is seeking dynamic students in the public administration, political science, business administration and economics fields who are looking to expand their knowledge and gain valuable experience.

 
Qualifications
  • Currently enrolled in college as a junior or senior with a cumulative GPA of 3.0.
  • Strong interest in public service and public policy.
  • Exceptional organizational and project management skills and strong written, oral and communications skills.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment, adheres to strict deadlines, has general computer skills and is professional, flexible, dependable and independent.
  • Outstanding attention to detail and a strong work ethic.
 
Job Description
Support the work of the Executive Office of the Mayor of Jacksonville by conducting research, compiling reports; attend special meetings, doing and supporting the mayor’s staff as assigned. A great opportunity to gain work experience in a fast-paced and exciting public office working to make Jacksonville a better city.

Internship Project Plan
2012-2013
 
The experience begins with a general briefing of the functions of the executive office, followed by participation in functional activities while working on a tailored research project. The goal of the internship experience is to provide an understanding of the operational functions of the Office of the Mayor and municipal government.
 
Week 1
-          Workshop Brief: Introduction to Government 101

Week 2 - 3
-          Attend senior staff meeting
-          Begin planning research project
-          Assignment detail with chief of staff and deputy chief of staff

Week 6
-          Participate in scheduling and advance for the mayor and executive staff

Office of the Mayor
 
Chief of Staff
The Chief of Staff and Deputy Chief of Staff are jointly responsible for advancing the agenda and policy initiatives of the mayor. Responsibilities include managing the executive staff, oversight of all legislative activities, community outreach, policy development, scheduling and public relation activities. Interns will work alongside staff in matters concerning policy and research.
 
Chief Administrative Officer
The Chief Administrative Officer and Deputy Chief Administrative Officer provide oversight of the day-to-day operations of the City of Jacksonville. These top executive positions are responsible for the managing the implementation of all departments, policies and initiatives for the city. Interns will work with staff facilitate operations activities.
 
Policy
The policy director(s) monitor and lobby local, state and federal legislation that impact the City of Jacksonville. Essential functions in this capacity include issue resolution and resolution, and the guidance and direction of legislation and proposals. Interns will be involved in legislative tracking and document preparation. 
 
Education Commissioner
The office of the education commissioner acts as a local champion and advocate of education. Interns will be involved in research and community events.
 
Scheduling and Advance
In scheduling and advance, requests from speaking engagements to meeting requests for the mayor and executive staff are received and processed, along with the coordination of event participation. Interns will be involved in frequent interaction with event organizers to ensure details are included in scheduling calendars.
