Why choose the City of Jacksonville?

Are you looking for an exciting place to work? Then the City of Jacksonville is the place for you.

The City of Jacksonville offers a wide variety of career opportunities with competitive salaries, opportunities for advancement and a generous benefits package.

The city has several different types of jobs, which are distinct from one another. Not only the nature of the job, but also the application and selection processes vary. There may also be differences in benefits eligibility. In all cases, the successful candidate will undergo a criminal background check and drug screen prior to employment.

Civil Service Jobs

These are full-time jobs of an ongoing nature and candidates are selected through a competitive process. Civil service employees participate in one of our pension plans and enjoy health insurance and leave benefits. Following a formal probationary period, civil service employees become eligible to participate in a career system with established lines of promotion

Non-Civil Service Jobs

Non-civil service jobs may be full or part-time and are generally of limited duration. Employees in non-civil service positions often have the opportunity to advance to civil service jobs through the internal job posting process. Most non-civil service employees accrue annual leave and holiday pay, and some may participate in health and leave plans. Temporary, part-time, and special purpose employees (SPE) are not eligible to join the city's pension plans.

Why should you consider public service?

There are many benefits in working in the public sector.

  • A great opportunity to meet a range of people with diverse backgrounds and experiences.
  • A great opportunity to give back to the community.
  • Value in the work.
  • Job satisfaction in knowing you helped others.

Living in Jacksonville

One of Jacksonville's many natural assets is one of the largest urban park systems in the country. The active and passive parks and preservation lands are a key part of Jacksonville's quality of life. So are the miles of beaches and waterways, a major symphony orchestra, a sports and entertainment complex downtown and a myriad of special events that this sports-loving city hosts each year. The home of the NFL's Jacksonville Jaguars, the city welcomed its first Super Bowl in 2005.

In 2006 National Geographic Adventure magazine ranked Jacksonville as one of the top six beach towns in the United States, and Amelia Island was recently named among the 'Top 10 North American Islands' by Conde Nast Traveler's Reader's Choice Awards.
