Background

The position of inspector general was originally established by Mayor John Peyton in Executive Order No. 07-09 in August 2007. In December 2009, the City Council enacted Ordinance 2009-820-E creating a new Part 2 of Chapter 20 of the Municipal Code making the Office of Inspector General a function within the Mayor's Office.

The inspector general is appointed by the mayor and confirmed by the City Council, without regard to political affiliation. The appointment is made on the basis of integrity, leadership, demonstrated ability in accounting, auditing, financial analysis, management analysis, public administration, investigation or other related fields.

The inspector general reports and answers directly to the mayor and is not subject to supervision or control by any other city officer or employee, in order that audit, investigative and other activities and objectivity remain free from interference. The Office of Inspector General is operationally independent from the mayor; and the mayor will not prevent, impair or prohibit the Inspector General from initializing, carrying out or completing any audit, investigation or review.

The office provides a central point of coordination and responsibility for activities that promote the efficiency, accountability, integrity and transparency within the executive branch of city government and that aid in the prevention of conduct which undermines the integrity of government. Our goal is to prevent misconduct and abuse, expose it if it does occur and seek appropriate remedies to recover misused public monies.

Above all, the inspector general's principal objective is to promote ethics, honesty and efficiency in government and to promote the public's trust in government.
