Pet Friendly Emergency Shelters in Jacksonville

Pet Friendly Shelter IconThe City of Jacksonville launched the Pet Friendly Public Evacuation Shelter Program to meet the needs of the community during hurricane season.

Admission
For admission to a pet friendly shelter, you will need a photo ID and proof of your dog and/or cat's updated rabies shot and rabies license. Further requirements are outlined below.

Species Allowed
The following animal species will be accepted into the shelters:

  • Dogs
  • Cats
  • Rodents (such as hamsters, gerbils, etc.)
  • Rabbits
  • Birds
    NO REPTILES (except turtles) WILL BE ALLOWED IN THE SHELTERS. Electricity is not available to support enclosures. 

Pet Requirements
All pets must have proof of vaccinations, be properly crated or caged and be maintained by their owners. Animals may be housed in a separate room from their owners. Click here to learn more about licensing your pet.

Owners should provide all necessary supplies to maintain their pet. The items to include in a pet emergency kit are listed on the Emergency Kit for Pets page.

Transportation
Service animals are the only animals allowed on public transportation. Make sure you plan ahead to get your pet safely to a shelter.

Call for Volunteers
Pet friendly shelters need volunteers to function. If you would like to volunteer at a pet friendly shelter, you must register with Volunteer Services. Click here to contact Volunteer Services.

This program is a coordinated project involving Animal Care and Protective Services, the Emergency Operations Center, the Duval County Health Department, the Duval County School System, the American Red Cross and Jacksonville Humane Society.
