Employment

Title I of the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 prohibits private employers, State and local governments, employment agencies and labor unions from discriminating against qualified individuals with disabilities in job application procedures, hiring, firing, advancement, compensation, job training, and other terms, conditions, and privileges of employment. The ADA covers employers with 15 or more employees, including State and local governments. It also applies to employment agencies and labor organizations. Information and Communication Technology

In 1998, Congress amended the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 to require Federal agencies to make their electronic and information technology (EIT) accessible to person with disabilities. The law applies to all Federal agencies when they "develop, procure, maintain, or use" electronic and information technology. Under Section 508 (29 U.S.C. 794 d), agencies must give persons with disabilities, both Federal employees and members of the public, access to information that is comparable to access available to others.

Generally, the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, and the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), require that State and local governments provide qualified individuals with disabilities equal access to their programs, services, or activities.
