home-for-holidaysHome For The Holidays: National Family Caregivers Month

Each November, the nation celebrates the more than 60 million caregivers who provide care for loved ones with National Family Caregivers Month. This years' theme was "Care Comes Home," a nod to the millions of aging Americans who are staying in their homes with the help of their caregivers. We know that 90 percent of adults would prefer to stay in their current home as they age. Caregivers like you help this happen every day.

To see how National Family Caregivers Month was celebrated all around the country, visit the Caregiver Action Network. Thank you for caring!

work-care-repeatWork, Care, Repeat

Your role as a family caregiver is a job in and of itself. Many Northeast Florida caregivers juggle this job with careers of their own, each with its own list of demands. As a working caregiver, balance is key; neither role should dominate your life. Need help with the balancing act? The following advice should help ease the load:

Be honest. You may need to have a frank conversation about your role as a caregiver with your human resources department. Explore benefits offered by your company, including flexible hours and paid time off.

Know your rights. Under the Family and Medical Leave Act, you are entitled to up to 12 weeks of unpaid time off per year without sacrificing your job security or health benefits.

Ask for help. Enlist help from family and friends to ensure enough time to get your work done properly ... as well as some time for yourself once you've punched out.

Resources To Help You Work And Care

AARP offers a plethora of information for working caregivers, including a free e-book by caregiving expert Amy Goyer.

The National Alliance for Caregiving can help you find resources to provide the best possible care, while still caring for yourself.

Next Step In Care helps family caregivers and healthcare professionals work together to coordinate care, including planning guides, healthcare definitions and helpful videos.
