In October 2013, the Sex Crimes Unit and the Family Violence (& Child Abuse) Unit merged and is now known as the Special Assault Unit.
The detectives in this unit investigate all suspected felony sexual assaults, crimes involving child pornography, lewd and lascivious acts, aggravated child abuse, child neglect, elder abuse, and exploitation of the elderly.
On a daily basis, detectives coordinate with Florida Department of Children and Families (DCF) child protective investigators and with counselors and doctors working for the University of Florida Child Protection Team. This collaborative effort ensures that all assigned cases are thoroughly investigated.

The members of the Special Assault Unit also work closely with the Special Assault Division of the State Attorney's Office to ensure successful investigation and prosecution of all felony sex crimes, child and elderly abuse cases. The Special Assault Unit also works with several public and private organizations such as the Child Protection Team, the Department of Children and Families, the City of Jacksonville Victim Services and the Women's Center who provide forensic examinations, victim interviews as well as counseling for victims.

An important component of the Special Assault Unit is the Intimate Violence Enhanced Services Team (InVEST). The mission of InVEST is to provide a multidisciplinary, focused response to the problem of domestic violence. To learn more about InVEST please click here.
