The International Affairs Unit (IAU) seeks to reduce crime in the non-English speaking community by educating residents about crime prevention. Members of the IAU routinely attend community functions and work with the Mayor's Hispanic Advisory Board to build relationships with the residents to develop open lines of communication. Members of the unit also initiate contact with non-English speaking residents by visiting apartment complexes and neighborhoods to discuss crime prevention methods.

The IAU also serves as a liaison JSO's International Affairs Unitbetween the Sheriff's Office and
the non-English speaking community. The primary function of the unit is to address crimes that affect those residents who may be reluctant to otherwise report them. In 2007 the IAU assisted in numerous criminal cases by acting as a resource for other Sheriff's Office units.
