The Tactical Support Section includes the Criminal Apprehension Unit, the Gang Investigations Unit, Gun Crime Unit, and the Hostage Negotiator Team and brings together some of the most highly skilled officers who continually train and stand ready at all times to address the public safety needs of the community.

Members of the unit are trained and equipped to provide covert surveillance and work investigations that are unique such as: serial-type crimes, organized crimes and offenses that require undercover work. The unit also serves arrest warrants on suspects who are known to be violent or have a tendency to flee.

All members of the Criminal Apprehension Unit are subject to SWAT call-outs 24 hours a day. The unit also serves high-risk search and arrest warrants for other units within the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office and outside agencies such as the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives, Federal Bureau of Investigation, and the U. S. Marshal's Office.

Gun Crime Investigations Unit

The Gun Crime Investigations Unit's goal is to reduce firearm related violence by targeting the distribution to and possession of illegal firearms to violent criminals, gang offenders, and juveniles.

A Special Agent from the Florida Department of Law Enforcement is assigned to the unit on a full time basis. The Gun Crime Investigations Unit works in partnership with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATFE), the State Attorney's Office, and the U.S. State Attorney's Office to reduce firearms related violence.

By partnering with the ATFE the investigators act as force multipliers in the effort to stem the flow of illegal firearms in our community. They target armed career criminals who are considered the 'worst of the worst' of the criminal element in our community.

Hostage Negotiator Team

The Hostage Negotiator Team responds to incidents involving hostage situations, barricaded suspects, and crisis/suicide intervention. The team falls under the Division of Homeland Security, but the members are assigned throughout the agency.

Members of the team train vigorously and often; both alone and with the SWAT Team. A team psychologist is contracted to conduct training with the team each month. Training consists of reviewing mental health issues as they are related to negotiations, communications and crisis intervention.
