The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office Bomb Squad is one of the specialized units included within the Department of Investigations and Homeland Security. The Bomb Squad primarily responds to calls of suspicious packages and for the recovery of unexploded ordnance.
The Bomb Squad members are assigned throughout the Sheriff's Office, but respond to incidents via a callout notification system.
The certified explosives technician training is obtained at the Redstone Arsenal in Huntsville, Alabama and is administered with the assistance of the U. S. Army and is certified through the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). After completing the basic certification training, members attend additional training classes administered through the federal government. The team receives training in improvised explosive electronics and explosive foam mitigation training. The Bomb Squad members participate annually in table-top and field training exercises sponsored by the state Regional Domestic Security Task Force (RDSTF).
