Aggravated Battery Unit
The Aggravated Battery Unit was created in 2006 and deliberately designed to help solve non-fatal shooting incidents. Sometimes the difference between a homicide (death) and an aggravated battery is not the intent of the suspect, but rather the outcome of the event. This unit focuses on those crimes.
The Unit is under the command of the Aggravated Battery Lieutenant. It is staffed by one sergeant and and eight detectives. The eight detectives work in pairs and investigate cases dealing with non-domestic firearm related aggravated batteries, aggravated assaults where a firearm is discharged and shootings into occupied dwellings/vehicles.
Like all JSO detective units, they work closely with other detective units to solve these crimes, such as: the Violent Crimes Task Force;
Gang Unit;
Narcotics; and
Homicide. They also work with in conjunction with the State Attorney's Office Major Crimes Unit, which allows all assigned cases to be eligible for enhanced penalties with prosecution.
The ultimate goal for this Unit is to apprehend suspects involved in gun crimes, identify patterns or trends of violence, make solid prosecutable cases, and subsequently prevent situations from escalating into murder.
