Traffic Homicide Unit

The Traffic Homicide Unit is staffed by one sergeant and five detectives who are all trained accident reconstructionists. The unit is responsible for investigating traffic fatalities, and hit and run crashes with serious bodily injury.

The Traffic Homicide Unit works closely with a dedicated Assistant State Attorney to prosecute all criminal traffic fatality cases. The unit also assists the State Attorney's Office with Peer Impact Presentations at local high schools. The goal of this program is to educate the youth of our community about driving dangerously, either while impaired under the influence of drugs or alcohol, or driving beyond the ability of the driver's experience.

The unit is also a member of the Duval County Traffic Safety Team, which provides safety instruction and training to the community on traffic related hazards. Historically, the major contributing causes of traffic fatalities are:

  • driving while impaired
  • excessive speed and
  • not using safety belts

The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office encourages the public to drive safely and responsibly.
