Give The Gift Of YOU This Holiday Season!

As the song goes, "It's the most wonderful time of the year," when family and friends share in the season's festivities, and schedules fill up with extra cooking, baking, shopping and cleaning. Before you know it, all that "extra" can result in caregiver burnout.

Remember that quality time spent with your loved ones is what makes the holidays special. YOU are the best gift you can give your loved ones.

Enjoy the holidays, and this issue of Caregiver Connections! E-mail us your ideas for future issues at

Stay tuned to our next newsletter for the complete 2014 schedule of "Caring for the Caregiver" workshops and Caregiver Expo 2014.

From all of us at the Caregiver Coalition, we wish you Happy Holidays and a Happy New Year!

Hope For The Holidays: A Community Hospice Program For The Bereaved

The festive holiday season can be challenging for those experiencing the death of a loved one. They may find themselves torn between the need to grieve and pressure to get into the holiday spirit. Regardless of when the death took place, a loss can be felt more acutely at this time.

For those who need help, there's Hope for the Holidays, a Community Hospice of Northeast Florida workshop created for family, friends and caregivers who have experienced the death of a loved one.

The workshop will help attendees reflect on their loss, learn ways to cope with grief during the holiday season and to determine what is right for them and their families. They will learn how to refocus energy on positive activities that honor and remember their loved ones and will leave with a renewed sense of hope for the upcoming season.

Hope for the Holidays is free and open to the public. Call 904.407.7001 to registerGo to CommunityHospice.com for workshop dates, times and locations, or download the flier

November Is National Family Caregivers Month!

There are many ways to celebrate family caregivers and to take action for National Family Caregivers Month. Family and friends can try these ideas to help the caregiver in their lives.

  • Offer a few hours of respite time to a family caregiver so they spend time with friends, or simply relax.
  • Send a card of appreciation or a bouquet of flowers to brighten up a family caregiver's day.
  • Help a family caregiver decorate their home for the holidays or offer to address envelopes for their holiday cards.
  • Offer comic relief! Purchase tickets to a local comedy club, give a family caregiver your favorite funny movie to view, or provide them with a book on CD.
  • Find 12 different family photos and have a copy center create a monthly calendar that the family caregiver can use to keep track of appointments and events.
  • Offer to prepare Thanksgiving dinner for a caregiving family in your community, so they can relax and enjoy the holiday.
  • Help a caregiver find information and resources on the internet, locate a local support group or encourage them to attend a caregiving event.

Get Your Caregiver Checkup Today!

CareConscious.com is making it easy for caregivers to get an objective and accurate assessment of their caregiving situation. The Caregiver's Check-Up is an online tool that assesses your situation in six critical areas, with the goal to help you avoid burnout.

In less than 10 minutes, you get a report with an objective analysis of your situation, receive warnings if you are at risk, and get recommendations for goals, strategies and resources best suited for your unique situation.

The Caregiver's Check-Up is powered by the award-winning TCARE® Protocol from the University of Wisconsin Milwaukee. TCARE® is a counseling methodology that has been used with thousands of family caregivers across the country and has been proven to reduce stress and depression.

Until now, family caregivers could only get access to this resource via a trained counselor in an in-person session. Now, you can receive the same valuable information quickly and easily, at your convenience online.

Access the Caregiver's Check-Up absolutely FREE! All you have to do is sign up at CareConscious.com, answer some questions and receive your Check-Up Report.
