Mayor Alvin Brown became Jacksonville University’s first Beta Gamma Sigma honoree on Friday. Beta Gamma Sigma is an invitation-only association reserved for the best business students in the world. Mayor Alvin Brown declared Saturday, Feb. 11, 2012 Luke Akerstrom Day in honor of one inspiring young man. Luke had a seizure in late 2010 that left him paralyzed on his left side and unable to speak properly or sit unassisted. With his determination and some encouragement from Jacksonville Jaguars players, Luke took the field on Saturday for a flag football game.

Mayor Brown’s Challenge is a team-based training exercise to prepare City of Jacksonville employees to finish Donna’s 5-kilometer (3.1-mile) race Feb. 11 at the Prime F. Osborn III Convention Center. The “couch-to-5k” program officially kicked off Thursday, Jan. 5, as Wellness Coordinator Jon Vredenburg led about 50 employees – including Mayor Brown – on a loop through downtown Jacksonville and along the St. Johns River where everyone was welcome to run or walk at their comfort level.
