Richard Nunn and Jacksonville's oldest non-profit agency, Daniel Kids Foundation, met their fundraising goal of $1,600. To commemorate this achievement, Mayor Brown shaved the Channel 4 weatherman's head live on television (watch a behind-the-scenes video.) Medtronic Jacksonville Groundbreaking Ceremony, Apr. 9, 2012
Mayor Alvin Brown helped support another expanding business at the groundbreaking ceremony for the new Medtronic Jacksonville Surgical Technologies Facility. Medtronic is investing $14 million into this new facility and plans on creating 175 new career-building positions with an average salary of $80,000. This expansion adds to the already robust life sciences industry here in Jacksonville, which makes up one-fifth of the area's workforce.

Luke had a seizure in late 2010 that left him paralyzed on his left side and unable to speak properly or sit unassisted. With his determination and some encouragement from Jacksonville Jaguars players, Luke took the field on Saturday for a flag football game.

Mayor Brown visited with volunteers at the Souper Bowl of Caring Service Blitz. At the event he stressed the importance of volunteering and how great it was that youth from the community were helping out. Since 2005, Jacksonville youth have raised $680,000 worth of food and money to Jacksonville charities through Souper Bowl of Caring.

Mayor Brown’s Challenge is a team-based training exercise to prepare City of Jacksonville employees to finish Donna’s 5-kilometer (3.1-mile) race Feb. 11 at the Prime F. Osborn III Convention Center. The “couch-to-5k” program officially kicked off Thursday, Jan. 5, as Wellness Coordinator Jon Vredenburg led about 50 employees – including Mayor Brown – on a loop through downtown Jacksonville and along the St. Johns River where everyone was welcome to run or walk at their comfort level.
