The campaign is a holiday tradition that was started by Salvation Army Captain Joseph McFee back in 1891. The red kettle is an important holiday tradition, collecting millions of dollars in donations every year to help those in need. |

Mayor Brown Announces River Access Initiative, Dec. 20, 2011
Mayor Alvin Brown designated 12 park sites for kayakers, canoeist, paddle boarders, sail boarders and other water enthusiasts to access the St. Johns River and its tributaries. The sites are part of the mayor’s initiative to create more active recreational opportunities along the St. Johns River and in parks.

Wreaths Across America, Dec. 10, 2011
Mayor Alvin Brown took part in Wreaths Across America, an effort at more than 570 locations around the world to pay tribute to departed members of the United States military. The mayor sponsored four of the 3,476 wreaths used to adorn each of the graves at Jacksonville National Cemetery.

Children's Christmas Party, Dec. 10, 2011
Mayor Alvin Brown stopped by the 13th annual Children's Christmas Party of Jacksonville to thank volunteers and welcome families. Organizers collected nearly 30,000 brand new toys, 600 bicycles and helmets and more than 50,000 novelty toys, pencils and coloring books. More than 5,500 children benefited at this year's event at the Prime F. Osborn III Convention Center.

Mayor's Mentors announcement, Dec. 7, 2011
Mayor Brown announced the launch of Mayor’s Mentors, a public-private partnership to train and place 500 new school-based mentors with Duval County Public School students by April 1 at no cost to taxpayers. The Mayor’s goal is to recruit, train and match mentors with Duval County Public School students to increase on-time, next grade promotion and graduation rates.

Mayor Tours New Saft Li-Ion Battery Plant, Sept 16, 2011
Mayor Alvin Brown and other officials toured the Saft lithium-ion industrial battery plant on the new factory's first day of production. The plant is located at the Cecil Commerce Center on the Jacksonville Westside. The high-volume, state-of-the-art production facility will build advanced lithium-ion cells and batteries for energy storage for renewable energy, smart grid support, broadband back-up power, transportation and defense.
