Fire and Rescue

Fire Prevention Division

If you have working smoke detectors in your home, then you can relate to part of the responsibilities of JFRD’s Fire Prevention Division. Among this division’s many duties, Fire Prevention’s public education program routinely communicates how working smoke detectors are one of the easiest and effective methods to improve home fire safety and avoid fire-related injuries and fatalities.

The Fire Prevention Division also conducts commercial building inspections for fire safety hazards, reviews new construction plans for fire code compliance and investigates fires to determine cause. And in 2011, Fire Prevention will also launch a new outreach program that canvasses neighborhoods where fires have occurred, to reinforce the concepts of home fire safety.

2011 Budget:
The Fire Prevention Division’s budget is $3,006,188.

2010 Budget:
The Fire Prevention Division’s budget was $3,162,050.

Firefighter checks a smoke detector.Fire Prevention staff partner with local and regional engineering/architectural firms to demonstrate how fire suppression operations are affected by commercial design and planning. Once the architects and engineers better understand fire department needs, such as the proper placement of fire hydrants and ample-sized access roads, they can design commercial complexes and structures that can be better served by fire apparatus during an emergency.
