Solid Waste
This division is responsible for the direct collection, transportation and disposal of solid waste in the city core. The division oversees collection and disposal of solid waste including recyclables generated within Duval County, excluding the Beaches, Baldwin and areas serviced by city crews, through the services of three private contractors. The division cleans litter and illegal dumping in the public right of way along streets and roads and operates a household hazardous waste site where citizens can drop off household wastes for proper disposal. The division is also responsible for the oversight of landfill operation and permitting. The Solid Waste Division has a compliance team that enforces the ordinance and informs the public about recycling, hazardous waste and solid waste issues. It has 132 employees.
This year, in addition to the activities mentioned above, the division will be overseeing the permitting, design, and bid process associated with the expansion of the current landfill.

Annually, the city handles more than 800,000 tons of refuse in its landfill. Of that, more than 2,600 tons are collected from illegal dumping sites.
