City To Host Tire And Sign Buy-Back

The City of Jacksonville, in partnership with the Jacksonville City Council, will host the second annual tire and sign buy-back event at EverBank Field on Saturday, March 28 as part of efforts to curb neighborhood and urban blight.
Residents can trade in up to 10 tires at a rate of $2 per tire, or up to 40 illegal snipe signs for 50 cents per sign. In 2014, the city collected more than 23,000 tires and 6,000 illegal signs at the event.
The event is a collaboration between the City of Jacksonville and the City Council’s Ad Hoc Committee on Jacksonville’s Neighborhood Blight, which is chaired by Council Member E. Denise Lee, and includes City Council Members Greg Anderson, Bill Gulliford, Bill Bishop, John Crescimbeni, Warren Jones and Jim Love.
“This is the second year of this exciting event and it is an opportunity for everyone to play a role in cleaning up the community,” said Council Member Lee. “Removal of the tires and signs has an immediate impact on the look and feel of the city streets and uplifts the entire community.”
WHEN: Saturday, March 28
8 a.m. – 2 p.m.
WHERE: EverBank Field, Lot J – southwest side of stadium
WHAT: Up to 10 tires and 40 illegal signs per resident will be collected. No realtor signs, campaign signs, agricultural tires or concrete tires will be accepted. Duval County residents only.
WJXT will serve as the event’s broadcast sponsor, and additional event sponsors include the Florida Department of Environmental Protection, JEA, Keep Jacksonville Beautiful, Services, SMG. Volunteers organizations include England, Thims, & Miller, Inc., Waste Management, Spencer Farms, Integrated Environmental Technology and CDM Smith, Duval County Public Schools and Allen B. Nease High School.
The buy-back program is part of the city’s efforts to reduce urban and neighborhood blight, such as sign litter, or “snipe” signs. This includes signs illegally placed on public property or illegally nailed, fastened or affixed to any tree, public utility pole, or other object located on public property or within a public right-of-way. Sign litter does not include real estate signs. Campaign signs will not be accepted at this event.
Fines for placement of “snipe” signs range from $50 to $350 per sign. The City of Jacksonville’s Municipal Code Compliance and Solid Waste divisions may remove signs illegally placed on public property.
