Local Historic Preservation Projects to be Recognized at Annual Awards Ceremony

In celebration of National Preservation Month, the Jacksonville Historic Preservation Commission will recognize twelve (12) projects and services at its annual awards ceremony for outstanding efforts to promote historic preservation in the Jacksonville area.

Award categories include: Heritage Education; Residential and Commercial Rehabilitation; Architecturally Compatible New Construction; Preservation Projects and Services; and “Great Save.” National Preservation Month was created by the National Trust for Historic Preservation to spotlight grassroots preservation efforts throughout the country. Communities take this time to celebrate historic preservation activities in order to create greater public awareness, understanding and appreciation of efforts to preserve local historic resources and heritage.

The 2017 Preservation Awards honorees:

  • “75 Years of Service: The Gamma Rho Omega Story” (exhibit at the Ritz Theatre and
  • Museum)
  • “The Reel Hollywood” (exhibit at the Museum of Science and History, MOSH)
  • Unless We Tell It…It Never Gets Told! by Rodney L. Hurst, Sr.
  • “Civil Rights Struggles: From the Beach to the Courthouse” (presentation at the Jacksonville Historical Society)
Great Save
  • Relocation and Preservation of the Oesterreicher-McCormick House (Beaches)
Preservation Project or Service
  • Downtown Jacksonville National Register District (Downtown Jacksonville)
  • St Joseph Schoolhouse Restoration and Interpretive Exhibit (Mandarin)
  • City Hall Historic Window Displays (Downtown Jacksonville)
