Nominees Awarded During Mayor's Environmental Awards Luncheon

Today Mayor Alvin Brown hosted the 23rd Annual Mayor’s Environmental Awards Luncheon, which highlighted the accomplishments of local organizations, companies and individuals in environmental awareness and advocacy.  Each award was presented by the mayor and leaders of local organizations.
 
“Everyone has a responsibility to be a steward of our environment,” said Mayor Brown. “The individuals and organizations we’re honoring today not only accept this responsibility, they embrace it. Jacksonville is fortunate to have great people who care so deeply and passionately about protecting our great natural resources.”
Fourteen local environmental organizations presented awards to individuals and groups for their outstanding contributions in preserving the local environment. The award recipients and categories include:

City Beautiful Jax

  • Beauty is Good for Jacksonville Award – Scenic Jacksonville and William D. Brinton
  • Beauty is Good for Neighborhoods Award – The Florida Times-Union

Duval Audubon Society

  • Carolyn Antman

Environmental Protection Board

  • Charles E. Bennett Champion of the Environment Award – Richard Maguire (posthumously)
  • Christi P. Veleta Environmental Award – Dr. Quinton White
  • DCPS Environmental Champion Award – Amanda Polematidis, Landmark Middle School
  • Individual – Pamela Fellabaum
  • Government/Institutional – DCPS Green Champions
  • Community/Civic – Late Bloomers Garden Club
  • Business – Citi

Florida Department of Environmental Protection

  • Environmental Excellence Award – BCR Environmental

Also honored was Barbara Goodman, receiving the Mayor’s Award for Environmental Stewardship for her 17 years of service at the Timucuan Ecological and Historic Preserve and her tireless advocacy on behalf of the preserve and the environment. The Mayor’s Environmental Award was given to Bill Brinton for his more than 25 years of advocacy to eliminate visual pollution and billboards in the city. This award is presented annually to an individual or group with recognizable efforts in protecting, restoring, enhancing and preserving the environment.
